Why air ducts are crucial
Air ducts optimize cooling performance by directing the airstream specifically through the cooler channel – instead of simply letting it flow past the sides. The result: under high load (highway, cornering, mountain passes), the oil temperature remains stable, even at slower speeds and with warm ambient temperatures
Without such ducts, a lot of air can escape without doing its job – the cooler works less efficiently, and the temperature rises unnecessarily .
Why this is important for your GR86/BRZ
Especially in the FA20/FA24 boxer engine, oil temperatures of 110°C and above are common under high load – particularly when using thin 0W-20 oil. Even 5W-30 only helps to a limited extent here. If you exceed the 120°C mark, the viscosity drops, and with it the lubrication performance – which significantly increases the risk of engine damage. Engine damage specifically after long highway stretches or track use with high oil temperatures is excessively common in this model and highlights the necessity of an oil cooler.

Recommendation

The mesh grid is inserted into the wheel arch liner at the front of the GR86/BRZ II to create a clean path for the exhaust air. This is recommended to optimize the airflow, but it is not strictly necessary and we only recommend it for ambitious track drivers.
Compatible oil filters:
Unfortunately, the OEM oil filter does not fit because its diameter is slightly too large. We recommend the HKS oil filter, which fits without any problems. Alternatively, the STI oil filter also fits - unfortunately, GR and TRD filters do NOT.
